Monmousseau's wine cellars “Méthode Traditionelle” and extraordinary cellars

Founded in 1886, in the heart of the Cher valley at Montrichard, the Maison Monmousseau possesses time honoured skills, and notably perfect mastery of the art of blending. The Maison Monmousseau specialises in making fine sparkling Loire wines, and Touraine wines in particular. The diversity of the soils and grape varieties, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Cot (otherwise known as Malbec), creates a variety of Monmousseau wines each with their own individual characteristics.

Winemaking is a real work of craftsmanship. Each and every new harvest, the house’s oenologist, tailors the winemaking through to the final note. When it comes to each new wine, the liqueur is fine-tuned to guarantee the sought after profile, all the while allowing the terroir to fully express itself.

Wine trail A belvedere over the Valley of the Kings

Tasting wine In the heart of tradition

Your visit begins with an amazing panorama over the river Cher and its valley, and the discovery of a troglodyte dwelling. After entering the impressive labyrinth of galleries of the Monmousseau cellars you are taken on an oenological journey through these extraordinary caves. In the space left after the limestone rock had been carved out, the history of the chateaux of the Loire is recounted in a captivating and immersive spectacle. And to conclude this fascinating adventure you will be initiated in the stages of crafting a fine sparkling wine in the “Méthode Traditionnelle” and the process of ageing on slats, which has earned the Maison Monmousseau its renown since 1886.

Margaux's tips

The careful selection of the harvest in the vineyard, which is vinified in Monmousseau’s cellars according to the méthode traditionnelle, and then aged for a long period in naturel tuffeau stone galleries, produces lively, elegant and prestigious wines with a persistent bead of fine bubbles.
